The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue
Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
